fine fair in the country

Honey, fish, shellfish, olives, figs, pine nuts and so on, this quality produce is part and parcel of the art of living in the Narbonne country and contributes to its reputation. Seafood like the Gruissan mussels, oysters and eels from the coastal waters vie with the petit-gris snails from the garrigue. The best bet for the hurried visitor is a visit to the glass-roofed market hall in Narbonne, a kind of temple to regional food, renowned throughout the Languedoc for its fresh produce and lively atmosphere.

Olives

Olives beckon on every market in the Narbonne area: the plump picholine, the miniature olivette and the slender lucque. The latter is the queen of the regional olives, crescent shaped, firm-skinned and crunchy, definitely green, but nothing to do with “olive green”!

things to do
  • Oil mill in Geyssière, Narbonne (towards Moussan through Malvezy). Tél.: (0033) (0)4 68 42 36 95.
  • L’Oulibo, Bize-Minervois co-operative: the only oil producing co-operative in the Aude. The oil is made from lucque olives, the best of the local varieties. Free guided visits in July and August. www.loulibo.com
  • Take a course at L’Oulibo: learn about planting, fertilisation, pruning, olive tree varieties and grafting. End of March, April and May. Tél.: (0033) (0)4 68 41 88 88.
  • Bring along your own olives and have them pressed on open days at the Oulibo (last fifteen days of December): 10 kg of olives are needed for 11 kg of oil.
  • Taste green and black tapenade in the restaurants of the area or at the Oulibo shop.
things to see
