the art of living : a palace for the palate

Gilles Belzon
Chez Bébelle, one of the four bistros in the markets, is the place to rub elbows with a rugbyman from Down Under while enjoying a tender strip of flank steak and indulging in a little local gossip, with the help of Gilles Belzon.

Bébelle junior : "Trading is like rugby"

“ Bébelle ” was his father’s nickname, a Racing player like himself. The “ little fellow ” is more than six feet high and weighs over sixteen stone. He used to wear the black and orange colours as a number eight player. Distinctive feature? The damage to his outer ear caused by rubbing against the shorts of his fellow forwards. Still, his eye contact is direct and his laughter clear.

How do you recognise him? By his deafening roar, when he orders the meat you are going to relish, directly from one of the butchers in the market hall. He is also the manager of the RCNM flagship team and spares no effort to keep them on the ball.

Rugby’s top brass meets up here at lunchtime, unless there’s a derby coming up the following Saturday. Life is twice as nice Chez Bébelle…
